How can you have a store if you’re non-profit?

A 501(c)(3)non-profit must:

-have IRS approval
-serve the community good
-be governed by a board of directors that represent the community served
-return any surplus revenue back into the organization

We sell things to earn enough money to operate Arts & Scraps.  We believe if everyone pays something, we are more stable financially and can continue to serve the community long term.  Most items in our store are sold for less than then cost of maintaining them.

Where does the money go?

Back into the organization.  In FY 2008, 95% was spent on programs; 3% on administration and 2% on fundraising.

How do people get on your committees or board?

They are volunteers and go through an interview process like an employee.
